Barks on Record

See the reasoning behind a better-routed report.

Worked examples show how the BARK framework moves from an observation to a proportionate first step—without pretending that submitting a report is the same as proving wrongdoing.

Example 001 · Subscription cancellation

A cancellation path with repeated retention offers

Hypothetical · Not submitted
01

What I noticed

The cancellation continued across several screens.

After the user selected “Cancel subscription”, the fictional service displayed a large retention button and a less prominent continuation link. The page then displayed two additional offers before showing the final confirmation.

02

What I recorded

The same five fields used by the BARK checklist.

Observation

The account page displayed a prominent “Keep watching” button and a smaller “Continue cancelling” link. Two further retention offers appeared before the final confirmation.

Context

Illustrative date: 15 July 2026. The fictional service was opened in a desktop browser while the account was still within a paid monthly period.

Impact

The cancellation required three additional screens and about four minutes. No extra charge was incurred in this example.

Action

The user continued through each screen, saved the final confirmation and kept the cancellation email.

Outcome

The user wanted the subscription to end at the close of the current billing period and written confirmation that no further charge would occur.

03

Where I considered sending it

Three plausible destinations—but three different jobs.

The route depends on the outcome sought, not merely the topic label “subscription”.

The business itself

Chosen first

The desired outcome was an individual account remedy. A clear written complaint gives the business a chance to confirm the cancellation and creates a dated record.

State or territory consumer protection

Possible escalation

This could become relevant if the business did not resolve the cancellation or another charge appeared. The correct agency depends on the consumer’s location.

The ACCC

Not chosen for the individual remedy

The ACCC accepts reports about broader marketplace conduct, but it does not resolve individual refund or cancellation disputes.

04

Where I sent it, and what I had ready

The fictional business would be the first destination.

For this worked example, the prepared package would include the account email, cancellation date and time, screenshots of the sequence, the confirmation screen and the requested outcome. No external portal was opened and nothing was submitted.

05

Status

Hypothetical—no report was submitted.

Real cases will use one of the approved dated status labels, including “Submitted—awaiting response” and “No response within the published period”.

What you can take from this

Choose the destination by what you need it to do.

  • Begin with the individual remedy when that is the immediate goal.
  • Keep the final confirmation and any later charge or response.
  • A regulator report and a personal dispute process can be related without being interchangeable.
